Bagasse Tableware Supplier for Bangladesh, Exported from India

Pulpcraft manufactures compostable sugarcane bagasse plates, bowls and meal trays in India and supplies importers, distributors, hotel and restaurant groups and institutional caterers across Bangladesh. With the single-use plastic ban now being enforced and no large-scale domestic bagasse industry to fall back on, Bangladeshi buyers need a certified, documented, close-to-home source. Our plant in Kaimur, Bihar sits on the eastern side of India, which shortens both the land route to Benapole and the sea route through Kolkata and Haldia to Chattogram.

Market and regulation

The single-use plastic ban is the buying trigger in Bangladesh

Bangladesh was the first country in the world to ban polythene bags, back in 2002, but the decisive change for foodservice came in 2024. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change issued a gazette notification banning 17 categories of single-use plastic, and enforcement began in earnest from October 2024. The banned list reaches straight into disposable foodservice: one-time utensils and cutlery, styrofoam food packaging, straws and stirrers, fast-food wrappers and thin plastic films on food packaging. Compostable moulded bagasse tableware is a direct, drop-in replacement for most of the banned items.

Single-use plastic policy timeline, Bangladesh
When Measure What it means for buyers
20 June 2024 MoEFCC gazette notification bans 17 categories of single-use plastic products, containers and packaging Disposable plastic plates, cutlery and foam food boxes lose their legal footing
1 September 2024 Follow-up notification issued under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2021 Gives the ban an enforcement mechanism through waste rules
October 2024 onward Enforcement rolled out, starting with government offices and the Secretariat, then hotels and restaurants Institutional and hospitality buyers begin substituting first
Ongoing Coastal areas, government events and public procurement pushed towards plastic-free alternatives Steady, policy-backed demand rather than a one-off spike

What this means if you are sourcing

  • Bagasse tableware is not on any banned list: it is a plant-fibre, plastic-free product, which is exactly the substitution class the notification is pushing buyers towards.
  • Domestic supply is thin. Bangladesh has roughly 10 to 18 small biodegradable tableware producers, mostly working in areca leaf and rice bran rather than moulded bagasse, and mostly at cottage or small-factory scale.
  • Price sensitivity is real. Buyers will compare your landed cost against the plastic item being replaced, so quote on delivered cost per piece, not on ex-works price alone.
  • Imports today come mainly from China and India. India wins on freight, lead time and SAFTA paperwork; China competes on scale.

Export logistics

Three ways to move a consignment into Bangladesh

Everything is manufactured at our plant in Kaimur, Bihar and exported to you. There is no local warehouse and no local agent margin: you buy factory-direct, which keeps pricing keen and quality traceable to a single production line.

Routing options into Bangladesh
Lane From To Indicative transit Best for
Sea, eastern gateway Kolkata or Haldia Chattogram Roughly 1 to 2 weeks port to port Regular FCL and LCL volume, shortest sea leg from our plant
Sea, western gateway Nhava Sheva or Mundra Chattogram Roughly 2 to 3 weeks, usually with a transhipment call Consolidation with other cargo or specific carrier contracts
Road, land port Kaimur plant, via Petrapole Benapole, then Dhaka Typically a few days on the road plus land-port clearance Smaller and more frequent consignments, faster restocking

Benapole, opposite Petrapole, is the largest land port in Bangladesh and handles roughly 90 percent of Indian goods entering the country, so it is well served by transporters and clearing agents. We quote whichever lane suits your volume, and confirm the port, vessel and ETA on your proforma invoice.

Certified manufacturing

Standards, testing and the paperwork behind every shipment

Our Indian manufacturing is backed by internationally recognised management systems and independent laboratory testing, so your compliance file starts on solid ground rather than with a supplier declaration. You can read more about the plant and its certifications on our about page.

Who we supply

Who we supply in Bangladesh

The same range serves very different operations. If your use case is not listed, it is almost certainly still a fit, and our industries served page covers the wider picture.

Importers and packaging distributors

Dhaka and Chattogram trading houses that stock disposables for restaurants, caterers and retail. Mixed-product containers let you carry the full size range without splitting orders.

Garment factory and institutional canteens

Bangladesh feeds millions of RMG workers every day. Compartment plates and 5 compartment meal trays suit high-volume canteen service where plastic and foam are now off the table.

Hotels, restaurants and QSR chains

Enforcement started with the hospitality sector. Round plates, bowls and 3 compartment trays cover dine-in, buffet and takeaway in one specification.

Cloud kitchens and delivery brands

Delivery-first kitchens in Dhaka need leak-resistant bowls and trays that hold hot, oily and gravy dishes without softening in transit.

Event and wedding caterers

Large-format 11 and 12 inch plates for banquet and wedding service, in volumes that justify a private-label run.

Superstores and retail chains

Retail packs of plates and bowls for supermarket chains that need a compliant own-label disposable range.

Positioning

Why buy from India rather than locally or from China

Bangladesh does not have a meaningful domestic bagasse tableware industry. The local eco-tableware sector is genuinely impressive but small: a handful of producers, mostly in areca leaf and rice bran, running at a scale that cannot absorb national-level substitution demand. That gap is filled by imports.

Against Chinese supply, India has three structural advantages into Bangladesh: freight distance, lead time and paperwork. A consignment from an eastern Indian plant reaches Chattogram in a fraction of the time a Far East sailing takes, and SAFTA documentation is a well-worn path for Bangladeshi clearing agents.

India is one of the largest sugarcane producers in the world, which is what makes bagasse cheap and consistently available as a raw material. Pulpcraft buys that fibre and moulds it in an ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 22000 certified plant, with SGS food-safety testing on the finished product. You are buying factory-direct, so there is no trading margin stacked on top and quality is traceable to a single line.

FAQ

Bangladesh export questions, answered

Is bagasse tableware allowed under the Bangladesh single-use plastic ban?
Yes. The 2024 notification bans single-use plastic items including one-time plastic utensils, cutlery and styrofoam food packaging. Bagasse tableware is moulded from sugarcane fibre with no plastic layer, so it is a compliant substitute rather than a restricted item. We supply the test reports and certifications your buyer or regulator may ask to see.
How long does shipping from India to Bangladesh take?
It depends on the lane. Sea from Kolkata or Haldia to Chattogram is typically around one to two weeks port to port. Sea from Nhava Sheva or Mundra usually runs two to three weeks because of transhipment. Road through Petrapole to Benapole takes a few days plus land-port clearance. We confirm the exact routing and ETA on your proforma invoice.
Can you ship to Dhaka by road through Benapole?
Yes. Benapole is the largest land port in Bangladesh and the natural route for smaller, more frequent consignments where you would rather restock every few weeks than hold a full container. We quote both the road and the sea option so you can compare landed cost.
Do you supply the certificate of origin for SAFTA?
Yes, on request. India to Bangladesh trade runs under SAFTA and we provide the certificate of origin along with the commercial invoice, packing list and transport document so your clearing agent has a complete file.
Is bagasse suitable for hot, oily and gravy-based Bangladeshi food?
Yes. Moulded bagasse holds hot and oily food better than paper board and does not soften the way thin plastic does. For curries and gravies we usually recommend deep round plates, compartment plates and the round bowl range rather than flat plates. Our guide to bagasse plates for hot and oily food goes into the detail.
What is the minimum order?
We support both LCL trial loads and full FCL containers, and we can consolidate plates, bowls and trays into a single mixed shipment. Tell us your product mix and destination and we will quote the practical options.
Do you do private label for Bangladeshi brands?
Yes. We manufacture private-label bagasse tableware with custom embossing, sizes and retail or bulk packaging, which suits distributors and superstore own-label programmes.
